Kuehne + Nagel manages distribution centre for Carrefour in Turkey

Carrefour Sabanci Ticaret Merkezi A.S. has awarded Kuehne + Nagel a contract for the operation of its Gebze/Istanbul distribution centre to serve the "Carrefour Expres" supermarket chain stores in the greater Marmara region.

The contract was implemented upon completion of the extension of Kuehne + Nagel's distribution centre in Gebze/Istanbul last November by a further 16,000 sqm, of which 12,000 sqm are utilised for Carrefour. Kuehne + Nagel further has taken over the operation of the retailer's existing distribution centre (5,000 sqm) in Adana in the south of Turkey before moving these activities to a new state-of-the-art facility in the course of this year.

Under the agreement, Kuehne + Nagel is responsible for the provision of goods' receiving services, quality control, ambient and cold storage, picking and just-in-time order preparation in accordance with Carrefour's distribution schedule for the complete product range, including fruits and vegetables. All warehouse processes are supported by latest radio frequency technology. A project to additionally optimise order preparation productivity levels through modern voice-picking technology will be launched in the coming months.

Christophe de Nays Candau, Director Organisation, Systems and Supply Chain for Carrefour Turkey said: "The decision in favour of Kuehne + Nagel was based on the company's strong management capabilities and very good understanding of Carrefour's current and future supply chain needs."

Holger Klatt, responsible for Kuehne + Nagel's contract logistics activities in Turkey added: "This new contract is a strong confirmation of our know-how and reliability in meeting the retail industry's special requirements. Our ability to seamlessly combine our long-standing relationship with Carrefour with local capabilities enables us to support the retail group's business and growth objectives in Turkey."
