From First Aider to Pharma Forwarder: Michael’s urge to help people in need
Thanks to an intense on-the-job training, Michael successfully traded his civil servant job for a place in the Pharma team in Kuehne + Nagel. Michael also has a background in First Aid and — although this may at first glance not be relevant for his current job — it shares an unexpected common denominator: helping people in need of medical assistance.
“I was looking for a challenging job with growth opportunities, and my job as a Forwarder in the Pharma team is certainly that. Thanks to the excellent on-the-job training and all the expertise in the company, I’ve learned a lot about the Pharma business and about the different types of consignments.”
Although most consignments are large volumes of pharmaceuticals, there’s one type of shipment destined for one person only. Usually these individuals—who can find themselves in all corners of the globe—are in need of specific type of medical equipment or medicines. “Airfreight Pharma in general is very interesting and fast-paced, but these shipments destined for one individual are in my opinion the most challenging aspect of the job. Timing can potentially make a big difference.”
Little did we know that Michael’s first aid knowledge would also come in handy in an obstacle run in which we participated with several colleagues from Kuehne + Nagel. One of them dislocated his ankle in a painful unfortunate jump. “Until the ambulance arrived, I helped to stabilise his foot. A couple of days after the accident he contacted me to thank me.”
Michael shows how useful first aid knowledge can be, and we are grateful that Michael was present at the event, and he, in turn, is grateful to be a part of the Kuehne + Nagel family. “I really appreciate that I was offered the opportunity to join the company as a Forwarder without any knowledge previous experience or knowledge about the field!”
