Headquartered in Switzerland, Kuehne+Nagel is listed in the Swiss blue-chip stock market index, the SMI. The Group is the global number one in air and sea logistics and has strong market positions in road and contract logistics.

Kuehne+Nagel is the logistics partner of choice for 400,000 customers worldwide. Using its global network, logistics expertise and data-based insights, the Group provides end-to-end supply chain solutions for global companies and industries. As a member of the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), Kuehne+Nagel is committed to sustainable logistics by reducing its own environmental footprint and by supporting its customers with low-carbon logistics solutions.
</pp:boilerplate>

“I promised a different sort of COP. A COP that brought everyone together – private and public… civil society and faith leaders, youth and indigenous people. Everyone came together from day one. Everyone united, acted and delivered,” said Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, COP28 President, in his event closing speech.

Indeed, COP28 delivered. Hundreds if not thousands of meaningful discussions and plenary sessions took place over 14 days of COP28. Politicians, scientists, students, and members of the public gathered to actively participate and contribute to voicing opinions and challenging the status quo. Formats varied, but the message was united and strong: to transition away from fossil fuels to reach net zero.

Kuehne+Nagel, a Freight Forwarding and Logistics Partner of COP28 and a leader in providing sustainable logistics solutions, played a vital role in the event. Electric trucks and forklifts were used for COP28 deliveries within the UAE, and for international shipments, the customers had options to offset their carbon footprint through the Book and Claim solution.

While successfully delivering the operational side of COP28, on December 8th, Kuehne+Nagel hosted a debate on Transition Strategies for Sustainable Logistics to facilitate an exchange of know-how and to lead the example of engaging with all supply chain stakeholders over one goal – to secure a brighter, healthier future.

Christine Wiederkehr, Global Head of Sustainability at Kuehne+Nagel, welcomed the audience of over 150 members of the public. Her keynote on Emission Reduction Strategy provided valuable insights into the organization’s plea to decarbonize the industry, fulfill SBTi emission reduction targets, and reduce the percentage of global emissions caused by trade-related freight transport (currently at 8%). “Since I joined the company two months ago, I realized that sustainability is not just a slogan for Kuehne+Nagel; their every move is dedicated to achieving better, more sustainable results. We share the same belief embedded in our DNA,” said Christine Wiederkehr. “To drive the change in the industry, collaboration with all actors along the supply chain is key,” she added.

Just like COP, Kuehne+Nagel recognises the strength of collaboration and partnerships. In the panel discussion moderated by Kim Winter, Logistics Executive, panelist Cristiano Façanha, Director of Road Freight Electrification at Smart Freight Center, Otto Schacht, Advisor to Kuehne+Nagel and Kuehne Foundation, and Patrick Schuster, Global Head Road Logistics Strategy and Sales Development at Kuehne+Nagel agreed that to build a sustainable and resilient supply chain, all stakeholders must act together in a goal-aligned and united way, guided by the correct principles.

“Many stakeholders need to be in tune to decarbonise logistics at the pace the world needs. For Road Logistics, we are talking about grid operators, charging infrastructure providers, OEMs, policymakers, logistics service providers... to name the most notable ones. One cannot move if the other stands still. Who will order electric trucks if they cannot be charged? And why would OEMs then ramp up production? We need to talk with each other and work together to make progress. The Smart Freight Centre has been an excellent forum for us to do that,” said Patrick Schuster.

Numerous projects executed by Kuehne+Nagel bring instant change and improve the quality of life for the local communities. Wind and solar farms supply clean, renewable energy without burning fossil fuels and emitting harmful emissions. “Energy transition projects are executed by people and for people – to remove pollutants and emissions from the equation and simply secure the healthier environment,” said Philipp Luehrs, Senior Vice President, Project Logistics, the Middle East and Africa for Kuehne+Nagel during his speech. He enchanted the public by showing how energy transition projects influence the region and explained why it is necessary to decarbonise the industries.

The last discussion sparked a lively debate: five panelists took the public on a journey to the future of air logistics. Azim Norazmi, Manager Climate Policy, Sustainability & Economics - Policy & Standards at IATA; Beatrice Cassou, Commercial Director Asia at Titan and Atlas Group Sustainability Advisor; Michiel Potjer, Chief of Staff to EVP AFKLMP Cargo at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, Daniel Randig, Senior Vice President, Air Logistics – MEA; and Fabiano Piccinno, Global Head of Sustainability, Air Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel debated on how to scale up available solutions, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and if net zero is possible in aviation.

All speakers agreed that regulatory bodies must actively guide the stakeholders and be empowered to mandate the transition from fossil fuels. Air freight must be handled efficiently and without energy loss, whether carried on cargo flights or in the belly of a passenger aircraft. Materials, from wrapping to paletts, must be of a sustainable origin and should be later re-used or recycled. Better route planning, load control, aircraft maintenance, and airport infrastructure – all elements contribute to sustainable air logistics.

"The collaboration is essential to reach the ambitious goals. On November 28th, Kuehne+Nagel delivered shipment transport on the world’s first transatlantic, 100% SAF-powered flight. Together with the commercial airline, we proved that SAF is a reliable and safe substitute for fossil-derived jet fuel,” commented Daniel Randig.

COP28 closed the sessions on December 12th after two intense weeks. Now, it is time to turn discussions into tangible actions, deliver on the promises, and prepare to report the results during COP29 in Azerbaijan.

Feature,Middle East and Africa,Sustainability,Net Zero Carbon

In addition to being CO2 neutral for all own emissions (scope 1-2 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol – GHG) since the end of 2020, the company has also decided to proactively address the CO2 footprint of the transportation services performed by its suppliers, targeting comprehensive CO2 neutralisation (Scope 3 GHG) by 2030.

The novelty of the offering also lies in the more intuitive SAF pricing structure. Until now, SAF pricing was quoted on a per litre or CO2 ton avoided basis, whereas now it is linked to the actual weight of a shipment. With this new SAF option, Kuehne+Nagel calculates the SAF usage and provides a quote in the well-known and customer-friendly “per kg” air freight pricing basis. After the booking confirmation, the equivalent volume of SAF is credited from 12.8 million litres of SAF available to Kuehne+Nagel while the customer receives an authorised certificate confirming the emissions saving for purposes of scope three reporting.

Yngve Ruud, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel, responsible for Air Logistics, commented: "As part of the Net Zero Carbon programme and migration to a low carbon business model, we keep developing easy and transparent sustainable shipping options so that our customers always have a choice of how they want to minimise the environmental impact of their shipments. SAF significantly reduces the amount of additional carbon introduced into the global carbon cycle by at least 75%.

For more information about Kuehne+Nagel's sustainable aviation fuel offering, please visit the Kuehne+Nagel SAF webpage.

Group,Air Logistics,Global,English,Net Zero Carbon,Sustainability

Herrmann’s athletic performance culminated in a fifth place in this year’s Vendée Globe and created strong enthusiasm and media impact in Germany, France and many other countries around the globe.

The partnership will continue to focus on ocean science and education as well as joint key actions to enable CO2 visibility and CO2 reduction. The promotion of new fuels based on renewable energies complements the common agenda. The mission of Team Malizia is to promote ocean science and environmental education around the world whilst organising touch points and events along race stopovers for businesses to exchange on sustainability initiatives and creating opportunities to interact with local schools, scientists and the general public.

Next to Kuehne+Nagel, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, Zurich Group Germany, Yacht Club de Monaco and others will join the common race for the future in support of the activities of Team Malizia. Both partners aim to set a new standard for major event logistics, minimising the carbon footprint of the sail racing league's transport within their climate positive strategy. As part of its Net Zero Carbon programme, Kuehne+Nagel is also pursuing its own goal of being completely CO2 neutral by 2030, including transport emissions from its suppliers (Scope 3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol).

Kuehne+Nagel will work with SailGP to support the global logistics of its multi-continent race calendar with industry-leading sustainable shipping methods including alternative fuels. In addition, Kuehne+Nagel gives the league full visibility on all shipping-related emissions through its Seaexplorer platform. The tool will enable SailGP to select more efficient transport routes for future seasons that emit substantially less carbon. For the shipping emissions that can’t be removed or reduced, Kuehne+Nagel will offset the remaining carbon footprint via verified gold standard offsets. Combined, the measures will ensure a 100 per cent CO2 neutral supply chain.

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel International AG, responsible for Sea Logistics, said: "The Kuehne+Nagel teams in the SailGP event locations are more than delighted to provide logistical support to SailGP at every regatta around the globe. We at Kuehne+Nagel are committed to providing environmentally friendly and sustainable supply chain solutions – also in the events logistics industry."

SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts said: “Our approach to partnerships starts with wanting to work with like-minded organisations that share our vision and align with our values and goals. Our global platform enables us to work together to identify and test innovations that could inspire new sustainability standards for logistics in the events industry and showcase how suppliers can take responsibility for the carbon footprint of their services – as well as help us to come closer to our own goal of being fully powered by nature by 2025.”

Find out more about SailGP’s Race for the Future here.

Sea Logistics,Sustainability,English,Net Zero Carbon,Expo & Events,Trade,Top

Besides the sporting ambition, the team has a strong message around climate change and ocean protection geared toward educating kids around the world about what is happening in our oceans. The team has partnerships with leading scientific bodies in order to advance research on ocean CO2 and skipper Boris Herrmann carries an onboard ocean laboratory to measure valuable ocean data during all races.

As Boris Herrmann creates transparency for science, the partners Kuehne+Nagel, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and MSC create transparency of ocean shipping CO2 emissions. The racing yacht is therefore named after the platform Seaexplorer, the first tool that creates CO2 visibility in maritime logistics. Based on carrier data, the platform gives the partners and their customers insight into the CO2 emissions of various maritime transport services and thus the possibility to choose the most environmentally friendly transport alternatives.

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for sea freight, says: “It is a scientifically proven fact that ocean health is ultimately important for human well-being. That’s why we keep investing in our fleet and in the latest technologies to protect the oceans and the environment, and, why we support Team Malizia's quest to gather scientific data from ocean racing under the leadership of the inspirational Boris Herrmann.

Kuehne+Nagel has set out ambitious goals to neutralise the climate impacts of supply chains, and is pleased to announce that UK Greetings has become the first company in the UK to address its CO2 emissions through the Net Zero Carbon programme. UK Greetings are market-leading publishers of greeting cards and gift dressings.

As part of its Net Zero Carbon programme, Kuehne+Nagel offers UK Greetings a complete solution for CO2 neutralisation. By choosing particularly climate-friendly transport solutions and offsetting the remaining emissions with CO2 certificates, UK Greetings’ logistics become climate-neutral. Kuehne+Nagel takes care of the entire process and ensures smooth coordination with the rest of the supply chain.

Ethical consumer spending has hit record levels in the UK, with 43% of UK consumers already actively choosing brands due to their environmental values (Deloitte UK, 2020). The Net Zero Carbon programme means that both Kuehne+Nagel and its customers are able to fulfil those expectations.

With Net Zero Carbon, Kuehne+Nagel has also set ambitious climate targets for itself. By the end of 2020, the company's own CO2 emissions (Scopes 1 and 2 of the greenhouse gas protocol) will be neutral; by 2030, this will be extended to all transport by suppliers such as airlines, shipping lines and haulage companies (Scope 3).

Richard Wilkinson, Operations Director, UK Greetings Ltd, said: “Businesses have a hugely important role to help build a more sustainable future. The industrialised countries in particular have a special responsibility. It is not only politics that is called upon to act, but also the private sector. With the Development and Climate Alliance, we have created a platform for this. I am very pleased that Kuehne + Nagel, one of the world's leading logistics providers, has decided to join the alliance. This is a major step and shows that environmental protection and entrepreneurial action go hand in hand."

Kuehne + Nagel is joining the alliance as part of its Net Zero Carbon programme launched in September 2019. Direct Kuehne + Nagel CO2 emissions that cannot be avoided will be fully compensated as of 2020. In addition, Kuehne + Nagel has decided to proactively address the CO2 footprint of the transportation services performed by its suppliers – airlines, shipping lines and haulage companies – by 2030. The Net Zero Carbon programme leverages three fields of action: detection, reduction and compensation of CO2. Kuehne + Nagel is investing in various nature-based CO2 compensation projects, where carbon is being taken from the atmosphere. These voluntary compensation measures are in line with the 17 goals of the United Nations for Sustainable Development (SDGs).

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for Seafreight, comments: "With its Net Zero Carbon programme, Kuehne + Nagel acknowledges – as a first mover in the logistics industry – the responsibility it has for the environment, for the ecosystem and essentially for the people. By joining the Development and Climate Alliance, we support the goals of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. As a globally operating company, we are convinced that the private sector must also make its contribution to environmental protection."
