"The award is a testament to our commitment to building AI that is not only powerful but also principled. It reflects the work of our global teams who have embedded responsible AI into our governance, training and operational frameworks."

Awards were presented this week in London at the SustainableIT Impact Summit during London Climate Action Week to organisations pioneering achievements in responsible AI and sustainable technology leadership.

What the award recognises

The Responsible AI Impact Award recognises organisations that exemplify and facilitate the effective and sustainable deployment of artificial intelligence at scale within the enterprise. The goal of this award is to spotlight and honour outstanding organisations that adopt and leverage AI technologies in ways that:

Optimise business and societal value

Ensure security and safety

Promote equity and inclusion

Foster environmental stewardship

"At Kuehne+Nagel, we believe that AI should always follow our lead. It must be inclusive, explainable and accountable. This award is not just recognition of our technology—it's recognition of our values," said Mark Buckle, Head of Strategic AI at Kuehne+Nagel. "We want to put AI at the fingertips of all our people so that we can use new technologies to benefit both our employees and customers."

Leading AI innovation in logistics

In the logistics sector, Kuehne+Nagel is a frontrunner in AI, leading the way and creating value for customers. Several AI initiatives are already live for customers' benefit.

"For example, we are using tailor-made generative AI algorithms to detect and remove duplicates from customer master data. With gen AI, we have significantly decreased the time needed to clean up the data, and at the same time accuracy has gone up to more than 90%," Sundberg added. "AI is helping us to automate almost real-time processing of expense reports internally. Also, we are using AI to predict estimated time of arrival to offer a better customer experience. Not to forget our efforts to deploy AI into our pricing models and customer service systems."

The 3Ps philosophy

At the core of Kuehne+Nagel's approach to AI are the 3Ps that define the AI philosophy:

People first: Kuehne+Nagel designs AI to augment human potential, not replace it. Systems are built to empower employees, customers and partners with intelligent tools that enhance human judgement, not override it.

Principle-driven: Kuehne+Nagel's Responsible AI Policy ensures that every AI solution is developed with transparency, fairness and accountability. The company upholds the highest ethical standards, embedding human oversight and environmental responsibility into every layer of the AI lifecycle.

Problem-centric: Innovation is not pursued for its own sake. The company always looks at the problem at hand first and only then decides what is the right technology to solve it.

Industry recognition

The 2025 Responsible AI Impact Award recognised organisations that exemplify the ethical, sustainable and high-impact deployment of artificial intelligence in enterprise and institutional settings. Award recipients include both enterprises deploying AI internally and commercial solution providers.

"As artificial intelligence and digital transformation continue to reshape the global economy, sustainability has become an essential business outcome—on par with growth, agility and customer experience. Yet, the sustainable practices and responsible AI achievements of IT leaders often go unrecognised," said Dave Best, Vice President of SustainableIT.org. "The 2025 Responsible AI Award recipients are not only demonstrating what's possible with responsible innovation—they're redefining technology's role in creating a sustainable, inclusive and equitable future. Their leadership inspires us all."

Across industries as diverse as healthcare, logistics, financial services, higher education and ESG compliance, the winners have demonstrated that responsible AI is not only feasible but also a strategic advantage. Award winners have shown that responsible AI initiatives can deliver substantial, measurable returns across operational efficiency, emissions reduction, compliance automation and workforce productivity.

Industry Awards,IT,Digitalisation

Headquartered in Switzerland, Kuehne+Nagel is listed in the Swiss blue-chip stock market index, the SMI. The Group is the global number one in air and sea logistics and has strong market positions in road and contract logistics.
Kuehne+Nagel is the logistics partner of choice for 400,000 customers worldwide. Using its global network, logistics expertise and data-based insights, the Group provides end-to-end supply chain solutions for global companies and industries. As a member of the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), Kuehne+Nagel is committed to sustainable logistics by reducing its own environmental footprint and by supporting its customers with low-carbon logistics solutions.

</pp:boilerplate>

Every transport somehow starts and ends on wheels. And each road freight shipment starts with a booking. But things are changing for the latter. The days of making bookings over the phone call or via email are almost over: Kuehne+Nagel’s Road Logistics division aims to achieve a digital booking rate of 90% by 2026 (up from 85% today).*

The recent launch of myKN Booking for road shipments in the Middle East and Africa will unlock the door to that digital ambition in one of the fastest growing regions. It aligns with Kuehne+Nagel’s Roadmap 2026 and its cornerstones ‘Digital Ecosystem’ and ‘Kuehne+Nagel Experience', as an efficient digital booking process promotes convenience and efficiency.

Configuring to meet local needs

myKN’s Booking feature has already been available for road logistics customers in Europe for several years.** In the Middle East and Africa, however, several additional prerequisites needed to be put in place to enable the launch, which eventually materialised in October 2023.

Noel Fernandez, Global Product Implementation Manager, had this to say: “One key prerequisite was the implementation of our Transport Management System RoadLOG. We completed the rollout to all 10 countries in MEA where Road Logistics is active in the course of 2023. On top, we had to ensure that myKN Booking met the specific booking requirements of the countries in MEA. These differ from Europe. For example, there are no postal codes in some countries in the Middle East and Africa. Hence, we had to configure the system, which takes time.”

Book a shipment in 40 seconds

Once customers start using myKN Booking, they don’t go back to ‘the old ways’. With the planned introduction of myKN Booking in the other regions where Road Logistics is active, reaching 90% by the end of the Roadmap 2026 should be a tick in the box.

And rightfully so, because digital bookings have a lot of benefits. Kuehne+Nagel’s customers praise it for its user-friendliness and efficiency, with one booking taking on average only 40 seconds. “We focused on making the tool intelligent so that it can learn from user behaviours, for example, remembering certain flows that the user executes. That helps them to achieve a short and efficient booking time,” Jens Bossmeyer, Senior Vice President Operations and Technology Global Road Logistics, explains.

What’s more, the intuitiveness of myKN Booking means that customers do not require training to start booking digitally (and to follow each milestone of the order in the myKN tracking portal, which is another benefit for customers who use myKN to book shipments). The same goes for freight forwarders at Kuehne+Nagel—digital bookings eliminate manual tasks such as copying data from emails into systems, simultaneously preventing human error.

New developments underway

myKN is envisioned to be Kuehne+Nagel’s single digital interface for customers globally. This means that it needs to remain user-friendly and adapt, if needed, to changing contexts and requirements. The customer portal myKN is, in fact, constantly under development with new feature releases.

For Sea Logistics customers, for example, the myKN development team recently launched a real-time container tracking dashboard. And when the team noticed a demand for ‘bulk booking’ for road shipments (i.e. a feature to upload multiple bookings at once without having to manually submit individual booking entries one-by-one. This is especially time-saving for customers with many different road shipments and line hauls.), they introduced a feature to upload spreadsheets that contain this data, which is then added to their cart—ready to be booked in one click.

The only missing puzzle piece to truly be Kuehne+Nagel's single digital customer interface, is the introduction of myKN Booking for Road Logistics customers in Asia Pacific and North America. These implementations are already in their preparatory phases.

*Digital bookings include bookings via Kuehne+Nagel’s digital customer platform myKN, but also bookings via EDI/API integrations with the Transport Management Systems of customers.

**For Sea and Air Logistics customers, myKN Booking has been available globally since 2021.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

The new Container Dashboard in Kuehne+Nagel's myKN online platform harnesses data of a geo system cloud solution to allow customers to track all their containers in real-time. In addition, it reduces manual effort in identifying milestones and current deviations from the planned schedule. It not only increases accuracy and productivity by eliminating previous white spots in supply chain transparency but also enables early preventive measures for the cargo.

Multiple data sources for increased accuracy

The Container Dashboard is part of Kuehne+Nagel’s digital solution myKN. Notifications on the next milestones, such as pick-up or departure, improve the transparency of the customer's door-to-door transport chain. This includes pre- and on-carriage, demurrage and detention, as well as transshipments. A new user interface lists container flows and dwell times and highlights deviations from the initial carrier schedule. Long-term analytics allow customers to reorganise routes that consistently exceed dwell times. The underlying real-time geo system collects and includes telemetry and multiple internal and external industry data sources, such as carrier data, terminal information, route maps, and vessel trackers, to improve the accuracy of the Estimated Time of Arrival.

An enhanced customer experience

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel International AG, responsible for Sea Logistics, says: “To meet the demands of today's markets, shipping visibility must enable logistics operators to detect exceptions in real time and take preventive action before an order is disrupted. The Container Dashboard gives our customers an unparalleled edge in exception management. Backed by Kuehne+Nagel's global network, which offers a wide range of alternative shipping options, our expert teams can react and reschedule faster in case of route plan deviations or delays. This development is in line with our Roadmap 2026, which aims to strategically expand Kuehne+Nagel's digital ecosystem for a better Customer Experience.”

Sea Logistics,Products & Services,Digitalisation,Global,English

Real-time visibility, an important concern to customers and carriers, is another key feature of eTrucknow: shippers and carriers will always know where their shipments or drivers are through the platform’s real-time track and trace capabilities. One-time shippers will receive standard visibility with pro-active service alerts on delivery milestones.

Furthermore, eTrucknow offers approved carriers the opportunity to convert their empty space or trips into potential revenue via the marketplace platform which provides them with access to a network of shippers requiring road freight services. Interested truck vendors can register for an account on eTrucknow.com and are subject to a vetting and onboarding process. To sustain quality of services to our customers in Singapore, Kuehne + Nagel collaborated with the Enterprise Singapore to train local trucking companies, enabling them to transact easily using the platform.

“We are pleased that Kuehne + Nagel has launched eTrucknow in Singapore,” said Lee Eng Keat, Senior Vice President, Commercial and Professional Services, Singapore Economic Development Board. “The development of such platforms is in line with our focus on digital, client-centric innovation within the logistics industry. This will help trucking service providers better position themselves for the post-COVID-19 upturn, and the recovery in demand across the ASEAN region. We hope to continue working with Kuehne + Nagel, and other like-minded companies, to develop more digital innovation solutions that increase the sophistication of Singapore’s logistics industry.”

“The intuitive and easy-to-use digital solution has been developed based on our customers’ needs and market trends. The platform’s functionalities are continously evolving to create an optimal customer experience from an adhoc shipment to the regular large volume of shipments. We are very excited to be able to shape the future of road logistics business here in Asia,” said Chellan Ganesan, Senior Vice President of Road Logistics for Kuehne + Nagel, Asia Pacific.

eTrucknow will also be deployed across Malaysia, India, Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia this year. The platform is a further step forward in Kuehne + Nagel’s digital transformation process and initiative to establish a seamless digital customer journey.

Road Logistics,Digitalisation,Trade,Asia Pacific

Especially in the current volatile market environment, transparency is crucial for companies requiring sea freight services. Industry sources predict a high rate of cancelled sailings in various trades in the coming weeks. Schedule reliability is currently at 65%, the lowest level in the past ten years.

</pp:summary><pp:boilerplate>
With over 83,000 employees at 1,400 locations in over 100 countries, the Kuehne + Nagel Group is one of the world's leading logistics companies. In one single digital platform, it is now possible to find the best option for container shipping needs, including transparency on alternative routings and sailings. SeaExplorer customers can improve their shipment planning and inventory management with the help of artificial intelligence and the access to big data.

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for sea freight, says: “Given the challenges of Covid-19, the enhanced SeaExplorer supports shippers not only with realistic lead times for routings, but also with service updates and up-to-date sailing schedules showing alternative departures for blanked sailings. This allows customers to quickly and efficiently compare options across all liner services to easily adjust routings according to their requirements for speed and reliability.”

As a new key feature, SeaExplorer also provides detailed visibility of CO2 emissions per service loop and port to port routing – a core element of Kuehne + Nagel’s Net Zero Carbon programme. “This feature allows our customers to choose the most sustainable transport option”, says Otto Schacht.

Singapore, April 07, 2020 – Kuehne + Nagel launches eShipAsia – an online logistics platform enabling Intra-Asia shippers to optimise every shipment based on the route, transit time and cost instantly.

“As one of the largest trades in the world, the Intra-Asia trade is a highly dynamic and fragmented market, characterised by transactional business models. This makes it challenging and time-consuming for shippers to find and procure the best transport options,” says Casper Ellerbaek, Senior Vice President for Kuehne + Nagel Asia Pacific, Seafreight.

On eShipAsia, shippers are connected to 20 countries, and can instantly compare sailing schedules and rates between 2,220 port pairs, 7,500 service loops and 54 underlying carriers. A wide range of filters enables users to fine-tune their search results.

The instant and competitive quotations provide full transparency on all applicable surcharges. These quotations can either be saved or booked immediately. eShipAsia’s smart templates also help to eliminate data replication, creating a fast and efficient booking process. The automatic rate renewals help users save time on procurement.

Advanced online track and trace features allow users to stay informed on their shipment status anytime, anywhere. A dedicated team of local operations specialists is also available to provide offline support.

Jens Drewes, President for Kuehne + Nagel Asia Pacific, says, “Users from our pilot testing reaffirmed that eShipAsia enables them to make better and faster decisions as the platform optimises their Intra-Asia shipments based on the route, transit time and costs. We are pleased to provide a seamless digital experience for our customers, changing a process that took days into a matter of seconds without compromising on our service levels and competitive rates.”

eShipAsia is an extension of Kuehne + Nagel’s online explore, quote, book and track capabilities and is fully integrated with myKN.

The technology-led platform is available in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Korea and Greater China and available in local languages.

Visit www.eShipAsia.com to experience the platform firsthand.

Sea Logistics,Trade,Digitalisation

Coming from a business unit myself, this is one of my biggest learnings.” Such events encourage creativity and foster intrapreneurship as well as an innovation-friendly mindset in the company. Recurring participant Julie Cooreman, Kuehne + Nagel Belgium, agrees: “I really like the Hackathon; it’s always good to step out of our daily jobs and to stimulate creativity.” Another advantage is the attractiveness and motivational factor for current employees and potential external candidates.

The selected topics showed a variety of interest areas including automation, gamification, knowledge sharing, and open source. The winning team presented a game that serves as an ice breaker, team building and gamified learning session – all at once. Joachim Albers, SVP Global IT Products, summarises: “At the KN Hackathon, colleagues from different departments and different countries come together to explore ideas and learn. I am impressed by their creativity, collaboration and commitment.”

Kuehne + Nagel leverages big data technology capabilities and information from operational system to grant unique insights to sea transport options.”

Users can find, compare and visualise shipment options across carriers. Information on services are validated by more than 200 million data sets per day from multiple sources, such as AIS (Automated Identification System) and Kuehne + Nagel’s operational systems.

The enhanced solution provides shippers with new features that improve the ease of doing business as well as the degree of transparency on the VGM status of all customer shipments and the history of persisted information.

</pp:summary>

Blockchain technology applied to upgrade Verified Gross Mass (VGM) Portal

Hands-on experience with blockchain in an on-premise production environment

Enhanced solution with new features and improved transparency

All information submitted via the portal is stored on-chain, which allows for using native blockchain interfaces for data exchange with third parties, removing the need for additional off-chain communication channels. Kuehne + Nagel designed the solution to strictly fulfil industry requirements of confidentiality and data privacy, adding to blockchain’s natural features of immutability and traceability.

Martin Kolbe, Chief Information Officer Kuehne + Nagel International AG: “The list of promises related to the use of blockchain in the logistics industry is long, but actual real-world applications are hard to find. The Kuehne + Nagel VGM Portal solution jointly developed by our seafreight experts and our IT team allows us to get a true hands-on experience with blockchain technology in an on-premise production environment and with a high number of transactions. Our customers benefit from a tamper-proof solution for information exchange with third parties with improved efficiency and higher transparency. Kuehne + Nagel engages in a number of blockchain projects with customers, suppliers and governmental bodies addressing industry challenges in various domains, as the full potential of blockchain can only be exploited when collaboratively working together with business partners. Our involvement in a consortium engaged in the digitalisation of bill of ladings for seafreight is the best example. Operating the VGM Portal on blockchain in an operational high volume environment delivers valuable learnings and expertise for the development of joint blockchain applications.”

The first version of the Kuehne + Nagel VGM Portal went live in 2016 to give shippers a convenient solution for filing their VGM declarations as being required for seafreight shipments in consequence of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Now, the use of blockchain technology further facilitates data exchange between the different partners.

English,Digitalisation,Products & Services,Global

Never before has our world been as connected as it is today. The reason for this is the digitalisation that is conquering our world at a rapid pace. Africa and the Middle East are not remaining unaffected and their digital transformation is growing rapidly too. Kuehne + Nagel has recognised the opportunity to serve these growing markets and to keep driving new value chains and business models in a lean and agile environment through the launch of a new Innovation Lab for Middle East & Africa.

“In 2018 and beyond, digitalisation will provide an important avenue for African economies to leapfrog not only logistics development but also development across other sectors of the economy. Our clients and people are at the forefront of our business, and the launch of the lab for this region was the next natural progression. It is indeed a very exciting time for us in the region,” says Marcus Balzereit, Managing Director Kuehne Nagel South Africa.

Based in Johannesburg, the newly launched Innovation Lab will be focused on driving efficiency on both internal and external processes with a main focus on process automation, partner integrations as well as trade solutions. The aim is to develop a deeper knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in identifying the process, as well as the technological innovations that will help to build competitive logistics and supply chain networks in those markets. Whereas Kuehne + Nagel is able to expand its current global innovation footprint, customers are provided with competitive advantages and an organic growth can be accelerated in the region. Innovation in the supply chain management can not only facilitate the moving of goods from an efficiency and customer experience perspective but also on a safety perspective.

“Driving value chains through people, expertise and technology is a key imperative for the MEA focused Innovation Centre. Although supply chain issues are deeply rooted in the region, solutions are there. Collective thinking is the key to unlock barriers. We feel it is essential to collaborate among the private, public and education sectors as well as the growing start-up ecosystem in the region. Now is the time to call on the market to understand and expand opportunities,” says Tracy Vance Innovation Manager Middle East & Africa.

Spotlight,Sustainability,Digitalisation,South Africa

With access to more than 3,000 vessels and more than 750 direct weekly services, Kuehne + Nagels network provides maximum flexibility in global container transport for all trades. Sea Explorer’s unique offering is based on the high level of integration and partnership with all major carriers.

The platform is an extension of Kuehne + Nagel’s outstanding quote, book and track capabilities. It is based on business intelligence derived from different operational data: algorithms built from robust industry expertise are paired with big data and predictive analytics provided by Kuehne + Nagel’s data company LogIndex.

Within Sea Explorer, services are ranked by smart indicators, based on big data technology, including a dynamic reliability indicator (DRI), emission score, nominal carrying capacity insights and realistic transit times for every service.

Today about 75% of the vessels arrive on-time and volatile reliability in lead times is one of the biggest challenges customers face in managing their inventory levels adequately. Through Sea Explorer customers now have the possibility to access comparative insights on service specific elements.

Kuehne + Nagel is committed to the protection of the environment and the preservation of oceans and biodiversity. Therefore the carbon emission rating actively supports customers to reduce the carbon footprint within the supply chain.

Otto Schacht, Member of the Managing Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for Seafreight: “High levels of data transparency are of utmost importance in logistics. Through Sea Explorer our customers will be able to access the world largest portfolio of seafreight service offerings. Thus they can base their respective decisions not just on transit times parameters but also on sophisticated comparative data such as service reliability and emission rating. We strive to provide the maximum visibility, flexibility and information to our customers throughout the world. Sea Explorer is another important step in our digitalisation approach.”

Sea Explorer is an agile project with further enhancements to come based on close collaboration with customers.

Group,English,Digitalisation,Products & Services,Global,Sea Logistics

</pp:summary>

With this initiative Kuehne + Nagel customers are able to improve the analysis, reporting and management of CO2 emissions caused by their transport chain and thus achieve long-term reduction of the environmental impact.

For the calculation of the shipment CO2 data imprinted on its freight invoice, Kuehne + Nagel is using the data of its online Global Seafreight Carbon Calculator (GSCC), providing instant overviews of CO2, SOx and NOx emissions for FCL and LCL movements from door-to-door. The FCL port-to-port emission data is compiled by the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG), whose shipping line members represent 87% of the global container movements, based on the actual consumption of fuel by each vessel, trade-lane, nominal vessel size and distance travelled.

Otto Schacht, member of the Management Board Kuehne + Nagel International AG responsible for seafreight: “Our goal is to raise visibility and awareness of the environmental impact within the seafreight supply chain. This will improve decision making with respect to carbon emissions. Due to our global IT operating platform we are able to deliver customised reporting and digital solutions not only in our core business, but also in areas such as sustainability. In order to meet the customer’s own CO2 reduction targets we can assist with moving the cargo, generating the lowest possible carbon footprint.”

The new CO2 disclosure on invoices enhances the existing calculator and is part of Kuehne + Nagel’s evolving carbon management programme dedicated to evaluate customers’ carbon footprint for their whole supply chain including warehousing and distribution. The programme includes the Global Transport Carbon Calculator (GTCC) linked to Kuehne + Nagel’s shipment visibility tool KNLogin and thus allowing online monitoring of CO2 emissions caused by sea, air and road transports. The GTCC not only shows carbon dioxide emissions but also suggests possible options for reducing them.

Kuehne + Nagel is an active member of the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) and supports the Group’s goals to reduce the environmental impacts of global transportation and to drive environmentally friendly logistics. The company’s carbon calculators are in compliance with European standard EN16258, the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) calculation methodology and the EcoTransIT World method.

Group,Sustainability,Digitalisation,Products & Services,Global

</pp:summary>

Kuehne + Nagel will migrate its processes for transport assignment, transport execution and monitoring in the Full Truckload (FTL) and Less-than-Truckload (LTL) segments to the TRANSPOREON platform in Europe in order to accelerate and simplify the interaction with its customers and carriers. In addition, the use of the e-logistics network will enable Kuehne + Nagel to increase operational efficiency and real time transparency along the transport chain.

This innovative approach is part of the company’s digital evolution and underpinned by experience and competence gained through the acquisition of ReTrans, a US overland logistics solutions provider, successfully using a digital logistics platform to connect to its carrier base.

In Europe, Kuehne + Nagel chose the well-established TRANSPOREON network, which is already used by more than 57.000 carriers in their day-to-day operations. This partnership will allow carriers to use one integrated platform instead of signing up for multiple market places. A proven onboarding process will allow Kuehne + Nagel to easily connect with additional carriers.

The carriers will have real-time access to Kuehne + Nagel’s transport requirements across Europe and be able to quickly respond to the demand with their available capacity. “The new process allows optimising truck load factors, reducing operating costs and environmental impact”, said Dr. Nils Wemhoener, Senior Vice President Operations Overland at Kuehne + Nagel. “Using the TRANSPOREON platform will therefore drive efficiencies for our customers and carriers.”

The roll-out will begin in France, one of Kuehne + Nagel’s key overland markets, by end of September 2016.

Digitalisation,Products & Services
